Downcountry

Featherweight Downcountry. Engineered and manufactured in Germany.

“The CELOS surprised me totally, because it is not only fast but also super agile! The riding position is impressively efficient, so that you want to accelerate permanently, even uphill. The smallest steering impulses are immediately implemented by the CELOS, so that I can direct it effortlessly, which is perfect for my playful riding style.”

CELOS - The Concept

The CELOS is a real downcountry bike: fast, efficient and extremely light. With the Featherweight-layup we provide a light and stiff frame to build the bike around. The combination of extra stiff and highly stretchable fibers allows us to build a frame that weighs 1.79 kg and approve it for ASTM Category 4. Each frame is laminated by hand in Germany and receives its outstanding strength values during the autoclave process. The arrangement and design of the rocker creates the uniquely high progression for a downcountry, which is responsible for the sensitive response to small bumps and good feedback. The combination of steep seat angle, long reach and moderate steering angle makes the CELOS a coherent overall package. The CELOS is also available in the option storage compartment and Superduty-layup. Our configurator allows the free combination of components and individualization up to the desired custom paint. To ensure this service and the quality of the frames, we limit the CELOS to 100 units per year.

Geometry

The geometry of the CELOS supports the rider with an efficient riding position and makes it easier for him to control the bike. The steep seat angle in combination with the generous reach results in an optimal top tube length. We recommend matching stem lengths around 50 mm. For riders taller than 185 cm we recommend about 60 mm. The steering angle of just over 66 degrees and the growing chainstays guarantee agile and safe handling. The naming of the sizes corresponds to the typical rider size. Up- and downsizing according to personal preferences is possible due to the short seat tubes and the variety of available seatpost lengths.

Suspension System

Progressive Suspension System

With its highly progressive suspension system, the CELOS has a unique characteristic in the field of downcountry bikes. The suspension is sensitive at the beginning and generates a lot of traction. From the sag point to the end of travel, the system generates 32 % progression and thus increases mid stroke support continuously. Bottom outs are effectively prevented. If a damper with 55 mm stroke is used, the suspension travel at the rear increases to 130 mm. The CELOS uses our proven Flexpivot, which replaces a heavy link near the dropout. The fully reversible deformation is maintenance and friction free.
Anti Squat

Size-specific Anti-Squat

The anti-squat value describes the pedaling efficiency of a bike very well. In theory, 100 % correspond to a neutral characteristic. In practice, values above 100 % have proven to be optimal, since other influences besides inertial forces determine the overall impression. Too high anti-squat values lead to a noticeable stiffening of the suspension and reduce grip and comfort. To always achieve the optimum anti-squat, we adjust the position of the pivot points for each frame size. The blue graphs show the anti- squat values for the four frame sizes depending on the rear cog (x-axis). For comparison, the gray curves show the values for a non optimized system. It is easily recognizable that the blue lines are closer to each other, especially for low gears.
Anti Rise

Anti Rise

To be able to use the short suspension travel of the CELOS while braking, the rear triangle must not stiffen due to braking. This behavior is described by the anti-rise value. Somewhere below 100 % - a slight softening of the suspension - is optimal to maintain grip. The size-specific optimization of the swingarm pivot point, which is decisive for the anti-squat, results in the practically congruent, blue-shaded curve for all frame sizes.

Layup Options

Featherweight- and Superduty-layup differ in their fiber type composition. Featherweight-layup uses higher proportions of particularly stiff fibers, so that approx. 300 grams of weight are saved without losing stiffness. The Featherweight-layup always comes without a storage compartment and is limited to 100 kg rider weight. The Superduty-layup always comes with a storage compartment and is approved for riders up to 120 kg. When using a 150 mm suspension fork, the Superduty-layup is required. Both layups are approved for use according to ASTM Category 4.

Laminating of the carbon parts

Laminating of the carbon parts

In addition to the quality of fiber and matrix, the manufacturing quality is decisive for the lightweight construction potential. Only if the prepreg layers are well compacted, a load-bearing structure can be created. This requires craftsmanship and care as well as the masterful control of the manufacturing process itself. In the autoclave process the material undergoes strong compression due to the applied pressure. At the same time, a vacuum is created in the laminate to remove residual air. Careful process control using measurement data allows the quality of each individual component to be verified. Especially for the swingarm the monocoque design is very challenging in terms of the mold design and molding. The monocoque avoids structural weak points such as overlapping glued connections and thus saves weight.

Lightweight Construction and testing at EFBE

Our frames make good use of the directional properties of carbon composite material. Strength, stiffness and weight are in the best possible balance. The elasticity of the material enables an elastic and maintenance-free joint - the Flexpivot - which saves even more weight. In addition to practical testing, we rely on extensive bench testing and work together with EFBE Prüftechnik GmbH in Waltrop, just north of Dortmund. In addition to lightweight construction, function and safety are basic requirements for us. The frame is suitable for use in category 4 according to ASTM F-2043-13. In order to be able to use the entire bike in this category, suitable components must be specified. Excluded is racing use in enduro and downhill races. Permitted is the use in marathon and cross-country races.
CELOS - Lightweight construction and testing at EFBE
CELOS - Custom painting

Custom Painting

At about 90 grams, Lars Diedenhofen‘s (70ID) paint jobs are very light and allow room to customize the frame. After the surface is only lightly sanded, the filler is applied. This is followed by the application of the paint layer, the decals and finally several layers of clear coat. In between, sanding is done several times, so that almost no transition to the logos can be noticed. Single color paints can be specified according to RAL and other color systems. Color codes of cars are also possible. More complex and multicolored paintings, as well as verification samples on tubes are possible after consultation.

Spare Parts

All parts that wear out and further spares are available from our stock. This includes downtube protectors, chainstay protectors, bolts and bearings. All bearings have dimensions according to popular standards. They can be sourced worldwide. The bearings distributed by us are full complement type and some are made of stainless steel. These bearings are made by Endurobearings and feature improved seals and use special grease. We provide spares for years to come, so that you can always refresh your frame. Thanks to local production we can even provide front triangles and swingarms long term. Which means in case you need our crash replacement program there are individual parts available and typically you don‘t need to replace the full frame.
CELOS - Spare Sparts
LAST BIKES - Crash replacement

Crash Replacement

With our crash replacement program we want to help with damage that is not covered by our 6 year product warranty. Crashes are part of our sport. Even a small mistake can set off a chain of unfortunate circumstances where, for example, someone crashes into a tree and the frame is irreparably damaged. In such cases, we give a discount on a new product or the necessary frame parts. Since we can stock or re-produce the individual parts of the frame, it is usually not necessary to replace the entire frame. The crash replacement program is valid for the first 3 years after purchase.

RESPONSIBILITY AND ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION

When selecting our partners and suppliers, we attach great importance to good conditions, both in terms of the environment and the conditions for employees. Therefore, we prefer suppliers from free democratic countries. In concrete terms, this means that the carbon fibers come from Japan. The processing into prepreg takes place in Italy. The frame is laminated in Germany. Milled parts come from Germany. Storage compartment bags are manufactured in Portugal. Colored frames are painted in Hagen at 70ID in Germany. Finally, all frames are assembled by us in Dortmund, tested and assembled to the complete bike if desired. We work 100 % with green electricity (Naturstrom). Packaging and protection materials and cardboard boxes are reused where possible.
